Breaker Won’t Reset

A breaker that will not reset may be seeing an ongoing fault, a heavy load still connected, or a breaker that has failed and can no longer hold.

Quick summary

If a breaker will not reset, the problem is usually still present. That may be an overloaded circuit, a short, a faulty appliance, or a weak breaker. Turning it back on again and again usually does not solve the issue and can make it harder to tell what is wrong.

Common causes

Something on the circuit may still be overloaded or drawing too much current.

A short circuit or ground fault may be present in wiring, a receptacle, or a connected device.

One appliance may be faulty and prevent the breaker from staying on.

The breaker itself may be worn out and no longer able to reset properly.

Safe checks homeowners can do

1

Turn the breaker fully off first, then try resetting it back on with a firm motion.

2

Unplug or switch off everything on that circuit before trying the reset again.

3

If the breaker holds with everything disconnected, reconnect loads one at a time to see whether one item causes the problem.

4

Check nearby outlets, switches, and appliances for obvious heat, damage, or burning smell without removing covers.

When to stop and call an electrician

  • Stop if the breaker snaps back off immediately or feels loose, weak, or unusually hot.
  • Stop if you notice burning smell, buzzing, melted plastic, or signs of damage anywhere on the circuit.
  • Call a licensed electrician if the breaker still will not reset after loads are disconnected or if you are unsure what the circuit feeds.
